Jesus as the Armor of God

Paul’s description of the “armor of God” in Ephesians 6 has been a popular topic of countless Sunday school classes and Vacation Bible School lessons. Understandably so, as kids can easily visualize each piece of armor and memorize the purpose of each one. Sadly, it’s often misunderstood and taught as a means of moralism and legalism, actions we must take in order to do our part.

The “pieces of armor” in Eph. 6 are not things that we, mere humans, can pick up and wield by our own power. The truth of this passage is that Jesus alone is the fullness of each piece of the armor of God. He does what we can’t; he fights for us when we can’t fight for ourselves.
