EVERYDAY MISSION

Course Overview

Did you know that if you’re a Christian, you are a missionary?

For many followers of Jesus, “missions” means taking a trip overseas or financial supporting someone who has. But part of every Christians’s identity and calling in Christ means that we all get to display and declare the good news of Jesus, in everyday ways, wherever we live.

Over six sessions, Ben Connelly (pastor, founder of the Equipping Group, and co-author of A Field Guide for Everyday Mission) asks and answers questions to help us live on God’s mission, in everyday life.

Each session involves a brief training video, as well as follow-up work to make the content personal and tangible. Certainly a course like this cannot cover every aspect of thriving in ministry, but The Equipping Group’s hope is that it serves you well, and helps equip you to display and declare the gospel — in everyday ways, in your everyday life.

(This course is offered for FREE, in a generous partnership with workshop.online & Village Church, Surrey BC. Village also curated session verses, questions, and assignments. We’re grateful for their collaboration! )

We believe in groups of people being equipped together — that’s even inherent in our organization’s name! When you purchase this course, we hope you’ll engage it with others: a spouse, potential church planting teammates, a sending church, and/or staff.

SESSION ONE

Why Should I Even Care?

God gives us a new identity in Christ. We are ambassadors, priests, missionaries, and a sent people to a specific field. Identities are deeper than roles and inform our actions, worldviews and thoughts. G

od has placed you exactly where he wants you, for the sake of his glory and his kingdom. He sends us into “Babylon” (Jeremiah 29) to live among the gentiles and be prosperous for his glory! All of this affects how we live out our identities, rhythms, roles, relationships, stewarding our time, money and talent. It’s a calling we all have.

Reflect

  • What did you find the most challenging or encouraging about the topic? What stood out to you the most? For example…

    1. Do you feel like you have to “unlearn” and “learn” what God’s heart for mission is?

    2. Does the idea of an everyday mission excite you or make you feel anxious? Why do you think this is the case?

  • Write down what are some of the roles or things that define you.

  • Before hearing this video, what initially came to mind when you hear the word “mission” or “missionary”? Where do you think this picture came from and what influenced it? After this video, do you agree or disagree that all Christians are “missionaries”?

Assignment

Consider your personal life, identity, and actions: has your mindset changed in thinking about the sovereignty of God’s purpose in where you are now living? What is one thing you could do this week to practically live on an everyday mission where you’ve been “sent”?
